Agricultural Awareness

"Going & Growing, Part 4"

Agriculture, New York State's #1 industry! The NYSAAF Agricultural Awareness program provides support to the local County Fairs to showcase New York's best in agriculture and livestock.

Each year the programs goal is to make funds available to Fairs to create exhibits or facility improvements that support agriculture during their annual events. These funds enable the local Fair to present something NEW about New York agriculture with an emphasis on education and product promotion in the local area.. The current funding program runs from 2008 - 2011

2011 Ag Awareness programs include:

Seneca County Fair - Waterloo, NY - July 18-23. This project will provide guests with informational facts and figures about each specie of farm animal on display at the Fair plays animportant role in New York agriculture and every day life. Hands-on personal presentations by 4-H members in the Livestock Barns will give visitors first hand knowledge of where their food comes from.

Hemlock Fair - Hemlock, NY - July 19-23. "The Dairy Farm, Then and Now!" This exhibit will showcase the progress that production agriculture has made throughout the decades. Guests will find on display vintage farm equipment as well as modem day equipment used with today's farming technology.

Otsego County Fair - Morris, NY - August 2-7. Ag-tourism provides economic stimulus for local businesses in the community. 4-H and FFA members will be on-site to interact with the Fair patrons to provide greater public awareness of the locally grown or produced foods. In addition guests can learn more about the local impact tourism has on the family farm. Visit one of the many attractions throughout Central New York and see how these valuable farms invest in the local economic community.

Franklin County Fair - Malone, NY - August 6-14. Be sure to visit Vegetable Hall. Here the new Ag Awareness exhibit will feature the Cranberry. A modem day miniature Cranberry Bog will give guests more insight into the production of his valued fruit. While New Yorkers take for granted the Cranberry, it provides a great wealth of nourishment to many. Witness for yourself an actual living, growing Cranberry Bog.

Essex County Fair - Westport, NY- August 10-14. The Essex County ·Fair has seen a rapid rise in the excitement of participating at the Fair. Be sure to visit the Poultry & Rabbit exhibits which have grown rapidly in recent years. New cages and display tables will provide greater public access to this small animal collection. This might encourage your children to become involved in a small animal project and learn the responsibilities for their care and feeding.

Wyoming County Fair - Pike, NY - August 13 - 20. Ag education is an important part of this rural New York community. Here guests will have an opportunity to learn what is involved in the management of the various livestock species and their role in the development of the community. Daily Ag Awareness activities will take place in the Youth Building. The theme for these activities is "Home Grown in Wyoming County". The products to be showcased will include apples, potatoes, maple, livestock, dairy products and corn.

Altamont Fair - Altamont, NY - August 16-21. Here guests of the Fair will witness the miracle of production agriculture. As you tour look for a wide variety of new and exciting exhibits, presented throughout the Fairgrounds. Each competitive department has been challenged to create something new for the public advancement of knowledge and enjoyment while at the Fair. Locally grown products will be the focus of much of the project. Included in their Ag-Promotions displays will be new awards recognizing contributions from local organization representing New York agriculture.

Grahamsville Little World's Fair - Grahamsville, NY - August 19-21. One of the finest Youth Fairs in the State. Grahamsville will partner with FFA and do a fooc4composting project for all food wastes created on the Fairgrounds during the event. Concessionaires and guests alike will take part in this recycling program. Food scraps and waste products will be collected throughout the event. The FFA students will then compost these scraps into biodegradable materials and return the composted materials to the school grounds. Signage and public address announcements will help to educate the public and create a greater awareness of the environment.

Trumansburg Fair - Trumansburg, NY - August 23-28. "Planting to Harvest" will showcase New York agriculture at the Fair. The process of planting and harvesting your fruits and vegetables will be the focus ofthis educational exhibit. Young and old will learn more about the technology used to grow your own food. Wheat and soybeans, popular Central New York crops will provide the catalyst for the exhibit. Guests will take home a wide variety of knowledge with regard to improving their home gardens.

Schaghticoke Fair - Schaghticoke, NY - August 31- September 5. Maple syrup is one of New York State's finest products. Rated high for its quality, fairgoers will enjoy the sights, smells and delightful by-products. You can learn about the advanced technological process used  to transform this simple sap into hearty maple syrup. Visual presentations, video and economic resources will teach more about this wonderful sap from trees. New York's finest maple products will be available for purchase. Enjoy!

Following your tour of the finest County Fairs in New York State you will agree that "Agriculture is very much alive and growing in New York State". The County Fairs provide the public the very best showcase for locally grown products and livestock. The County Fair strives to provide public education about where our food comes from; the fields and farms. This summer take the family on a journey around the State and visit many of the great County Fairs. Not only will you have a great family fun adventure. You will certainly experience first hand where the food you eat, the clothes you wear and the air you breathe really come from.
